Week 4: (January 28-February 2): Wikipedia and HTML basics, part 1

By Wednesday of this week, be sure to do the following:

• Log into and familiarize yourself with the our English 516 Wiki, hosted

by PBWiki at http://eng516.pbwiki.com/

• Read and discuss Poe's "The  

   Hive," reproduced with permission on the English 516 Wiki.

• Read, review, and get started on "The Simple Web Site Assignment"

on emuonline.

By Saturday of this week, be sure to do the following:

• Continue with "The Simple Web Site Assignment."

• Read and discuss "Use  

   With Caution: The perils of Wikipedia" from CNN; Justin Appel's "More

'reliable' Wikipedia soon to launch; Wikipedia co-founder aims to create a

more authoritative online encyclopedia," from eSchool News. (Sorry, but

I think free registration required); and "Wikipedia  

   as accurate as Brittanica;" and possibly other articles on Wikipedia

and accuracy.

• View/read and discuss "Wikiality--

The controversy rages on Wikipedia," from the Stephen Colbert fan site

No Fact Zone.Net; Wikipedia

in popular culture (according to the Wikipedia); Wikipedia  

   timelapse of London bombings and Wikipedia  

   timelapse of Virginia Tech shootings (both via YouTube); and possibly

other articles on Wikipedia and culture.

Week 5: (February 4-Februrary 9): Wikipedia and HTML basics, part 2

By Wednesday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

• Read "When

  Wikipedia is the Assignment," from Inside Higher Ed and Carr et al

  "Weathering wikis: Net-based learning meets political science in a South

  African university," available via eReserves. Participate in the discussion.

   

• Browse through/monkey around with Wikia,

  ScribbleWiki,

  PBWiki, and wikispaces. Start

  the create/play with a wiki assignment and discussion.

   

• Contine to work on web site assignment.

Don't forget!! Come to the Marshall Poe and Larry Sanger presentation

on Wikipedia, Thursday, February 7, at a location to be arranged! I

will keep you posted about the details, but try to keep this evening open on

your calendar so you can attend the various events.

Also, stay tuned for information on the Wiki Symposium on Friday, February

8!

By Saturday of this week, be sure to do the following:

 

• Read Chapter 4 of Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, "Wikis: Easy Collaboration

  for All" and particpate in discussion.

   

• Browse through "Using

  WIki in Education" site, Wikiversity,

  and this list of many other

  wikis about all kinds of things, and participate in discussion.

   

• The Simple Web Site Assignment is due by February 9 at 5 pm! Be

  sure to email me your link as soon as you are done with your site.
